India's poor position in corruption index, Supreme Court dismisses plea for improvement in country's ranking
This demand has been rejected by the Supreme Court on Wednesday. A bench headed by Chief Justice of India Uday U Lalit dismissed the petition. The court said that the petitioner can file a representation in this regard to the concerned officer.
India's position in the Global Corruption Perceptions Index remains very poor. Explain that India is ranked 85th out of 180 countries and territories. In order to improve India's rank, the Centre, States and Union Territories had sought a direction to the Supreme Court to constitute expert committees.

The Supreme Court said, "In view of the scope of the Article 32 petition, we find it extremely difficult to entertain the same. It is, therefore, dismissed." The PIL was filed by advocate Ashwini Upadhyay. The petitioner had sought constitution of expert committees and steps to be taken to eliminate bribery, generation of black money etc. During the hearing, the CJI remarked, "How do we eliminate corruption? We ask the Law Commission to look into the matter and then what? We already have special laws."
The petition states that India has been ranked 80th out of 180 countries and territories in the Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) prepared by Transparency International. The petition states that India's rank undermines democracy and the rule of law. Leading to human rights violations and deteriorating the quality of life. Corruption is fueling organized crime like separatism, terrorism, racism, fundamentalism, gambling, smuggling, kidnapping, money laundering, extortion, and others in the country.
