India is all set to host a two-day summit on green hydrogen initiatives involving BRICS countries

On June 22-23, 2021, India will host the BRICS nations, an organization of five key emerging national economies - Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, for a two-day summit on Green Hydrogen initiatives.

The distinguished event provides a forum for participants to share their Green Hydrogen projects and perspectives on how to take them to the next level in their respective nations. According to an official statement, the online event would be placed through video conference.

According to the press release, the virtual summit will bring together the brightest minds, policymakers, and essential stakeholders from the BRICS countries to debate and explore the future of hydrogen in the energy mix.

On the first day, officials from each country will present their hydrogen-related projects and their long-term ambitions. The speakers will also discuss the importance of various hydrogen-based technologies and their country's priorities.

The second day will feature panel talks on different countries' strategies for incorporating hydrogen into their overall energy policy framework. The discussions will cover finance alternatives for new green hydrogen technologies and the institutional support required to provide the necessary ecosystem for the technology to thrive.

As the world advances quickly to decarbonize its entire energy system, hydrogen is positioned to play a critical role in accelerating the global scale-up of renewable resources. Green hydrogen is hydrogen that is created by electrolysis using renewable energy and has no carbon footprint. This provides hydrogen with an advantage over other fuels in terms of unlocking new green applications. However, there are hurdles in terms of technology, efficiency, financial sustainability, and scaling up, all of which will be addressed during the summit.

Green hydrogen has a plethora of uses. Ammonia and methanol are examples of green chemicals used directly in existing applications such as fertilizer, mobility, power, chemicals, and shipping. Green hydrogen mixing of up to 10% may be used in CGD(City Gas Distribution) networks to acquire universal adoption.

Further scaling up with hydrogen-based greening of hard-to-abate industries (such as steel and cement) is being investigated. Based on their resources and strengths, several countries have developed plans and specified targets and roadmaps.
