India did not participate in the 193-member United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) resolution strongly condemning Russia's aggression against Ukraine. About 100 member states, including the US, Britain, Germany, and France, co-sponsored the resolution called 'aggression against Ukraine'. The resolution required a two-third majority of those who voted yes and no to be adopted by the General Assembly.
A total of 141 members voted in favor of the motion while five opposed it. India was among 35 countries that abstained. India's Permanent Representative to the United Nations TS Tirumurti, through his official Twitter handle, has defended India's absence in this voting process.
The UNGA resolution was similar to a resolution brought to the Security Council of 15 countries last Friday. India did not participate in that either. The General Assembly on Wednesday voted to reaffirm its commitment to Ukraine's sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders and strongly condemned Russia's aggression against Ukraine.
