In Himachal, 74 percent of sitting MLAs are crorepatis, 19 have criminal cases registered

Himachal Pradesh Election Watch and ADR have analyzed the self-declared affidavits of all 68 sitting MLAs in the Himachal Pradesh 2017 assembly elections. There are 19 (28%) MLAs with criminal cases. There are 8 (12%) MLAs with serious criminal cases. 50 (74%) are crorepati MLAs.

The electoral literacy campaign by Himachal Election Watch, Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) and Himachal Gyan Vigyan Samiti will reach out to over 50,000 households in 1500 gram panchayats and urban areas. Himachal Election Watch and ADR have released the criminal, education, gender and financial background reports of 68 sitting MLAs. This electoral literacy campaign is going on in view of the elections of the 14th Assembly. Jan Samvad is being organized to reach out to more than 1500 Gram Panchayats during this month long campaign, with the aim of making people aware about the importance of voting and motivating them not to boycott voting.

As per the directions of the Supreme Court, it is mandatory for political parties at the central and state election levels to upload on their websites detailed information about candidates with pending criminal cases, including the nature of offences, related details such as charges framed Have gone, got the information related to court, case number etc. The Supreme Court has also directed political parties to list on their websites, including on their social media platforms, the reasons for nominating candidates with criminal antecedents within 72 hours of the selection of such candidates. This information: a local newspaper and a national newspaper; Will also be published on the official social media platforms of the political party including Facebook, Twitter.
