Idli Amma gets new workplace/ home thanks to Anand Mahindra
The 85-year-old idli amma of Coimbatore works hard starting work dawn and prepares heer idlis mainly for daily wage workers working in unorganized sector. Her idlis cost Rs.1 per idli keeping in mind the small pockets of these labourers even if it means cutting her profits.

On Friday Anand Mahindra, Chairman of the Mahindra Group tweeted something extremely heart-warming and a true tale of the soil. He announced to the world that the popular Kamalathal aka ‘idli amma’, who became internet-famous back in 2019 for selling idlis for Rs. 1 per idli will get a new home with the help of Mahindra Life Spaces.
Anand Mahindra’s tweet in 2019 had led to Kamalathal getting continued supply of cooking gas by Bharat Gas company, Coimbatore.

Anand Mahindra’s wish to invest in Kamalathal’s business was granted when took to twitter to announce, “Only rarely does one get to play a small part in someone’s inspiring story, and I would like to thank Kamalathal, better known as Idli Amma, for letting us play a small part in hers. She will soon have her own house cum workspace from where she will cook & sell idli.”
He further thanked his Mahindra Rise team and explained to netizens that Kamalathal had told his team ho where priority was to obtain a home-workplace. He tweeted about it saying, “Grateful to the Registration Office at Thondamuthur for helping us achieve our 1st milestone by speedily registering the land.”
Anand further informed that the Mahindra Life spaces team will start with the construction of Kamalathal’s space.

She had continued her services even in lockdown, she had said, “The situation has been a little difficult since corona started but I have been trying my best to provide the idli at Re 1. I won’t raise the price of my idli… There are more people coming. Many migrant labourers are stuck here and so there are more people coming.”
