Himachal Pradesh Monsoon Horror: 78 Dead, 14 Cloudbursts, 3 Flash Floods
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued orange and yellow alerts for several districts in both states warning of more downpours and the threat of landslides and flash floods.

Himachal Pradesh Monsoon Horror: Relentless rains have lashed the hill states of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand for the last two days, resulting in significant damage, disruption and loss of life. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued orange and yellow alerts for several districts in both states warning of more downpours and the threat of landslides and flash floods.
With flooded rivers, damaged roads and collapsed bridges, hundreds of locals and tourists are stuck as the monsoon nears its peak across the Himalayan region. The state governments have set up emergency response teams and have continued with rescue efforts. Local government officials have warned them and other residents to avoid places with the possibility of landslides.
At least 14 instances of cloudbursts and three flash floods have occurred in Himachal Pradesh in the last few days. Mandi district appears to have been the worst affected where 14 have died, five have been injured and 30 are missing. As a side note, with the latest casualties, the total for deaths in the state due to the monsoon so far has reached 78.

In Uttarakhand there were some natural disasters since 1 June 2025 where 21 have died, 11 have been injured and there are 9 (Uttarkashi) missing with the highest of the dead consisting of Uttarkashi (8), Chamoli (4), Rudraprayag (3) and Dehradun (3).
The meteorological department has announced orange alert in some areas of Uttarakhand, for heavy to very heavy rain in Uttarakhand including Tehri, Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag, Chamoli and Dehradun, while other districts such as Haridwar, Nainital and Pithoragarh are under yellow alert for moderate to heavy rain.
Besides, the State Emergency Operations Centre in Uttarakhand has issued a high-alert landslide warning in Tehri, Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag and Chamoli following a forecast by Geological Survey of India (GSI) and India Meteorological Department (IMD).
As a result of rains and landslips, 50 roads have been blocked in the state, including 2 national highways and 2 state highways. 134 houses have been partially damaged so far and 10 houses have been completely damaged. The most damage was reported in Bageshwar which had the highest amount of damage with 40 houses affected, followed by Uttarkashi with 36 houses; 14 houses were also damaged in Dehradun and many others in Rudraprayag.
Further, the total of 169 deaths have taken place since the beginning of the Chardham Yatra 2025, including in Kedarnath (78), Badrinath (44), Gangotri (24) and Yamunotri (22); deaths were primarily health-related in nature.
The Badrinath National Highway in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district has closed down again following debris from a landslide. Various roads including Siwai-Karnaprayag have washed away altogether. Several schools in the area are closed, and officials are recommending that people and tourists stay indoors.

In Himachal Pradesh, Una, Bilaspour, Solan and Sirmaur also have yellow alerts, there have been damages from additional rainfall in those areas. People have been particularly challenged in Kangra Valley as heavy rainfalls inundated roads, and uprooted trees fell over roads. Before assistance arrived, members of the community worked together to clear debris off roads so essential services could make it through. Near Sammela, a few people cleared a highway themselves so ambulances and food trucks could pass.
Mandi district in Himachal was heavily affected by rain and flash flooding. During monitoring, it experienced multiple weather systems including a cloud burst. The destruction occurred over a swath of areas including over 50 bighas of farmland, and including a new bridge that was washed away. Four villages in the Churah area of Chamba was particularly effective by mud and torrential rains.
Presently there are 243 roads closed in the state including 183 in Mandi. Various power lines and water supplies are also down. According to a PTI report the loss has been reported at Rs 572 crore; however, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has warned they estimate it could rise to Rs 700 crore.
