Guru Purnima 2023: Meaning, Significance and History of this auspicious day

Guru Purnima is a festival celebrated in India, Nepal, and other parts of the Indian subcontinent. It is dedicated to honoring and expressing gratitude to one's spiritual and academic teachers or gurus. The term "guru" is derived from Sanskrit and refers to someone who imparts knowledge and guidance to their disciples.

Meaning

The word "Purnima" means full moon, and the festival is celebrated on the full moon day (Purnima) in the Hindu month of Ashadha (June-July) as per the Hindu lunar calendar. This day holds great significance as it is believed that on this day, Lord Shiva, the first guru in Hindu mythology, began the transmission of knowledge to his disciples, known as the Saptarishis (seven sages).

Significance

Guru Purnima is particularly important in Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism, as it is considered an auspicious day to pay homage to gurus and seek their blessings. It is believed that on this day, the gurus are in their highest state of spiritual power, and by showing respect and expressing gratitude to them, devotees receive blessings and guidance for their spiritual and educational journeys.

During Guru Purnima celebrations, disciples often offer worship, perform rituals, and express their gratitude to their gurus. They may present them with gifts, flowers, or perform their guru's aarti (a ritual of waving a lamp in front of the guru). Devotees also engage in prayers, chant mantras, and participate in spiritual discourses or satsangs.

History

Guru Purnima also has historical significance as it was an important day for ancient universities and teaching institutions. In ancient times, universities used to re-open after a break on Guru Purnima, and students would gather to pay respect to their gurus and sages.

The festival also acts as a reminder of the long-standing tradition of Guru-Shishya Parampara (teacher-disciple relationship) in Indian culture. It is believed that knowledge and wisdom are passed down through generations by the dedicated guidance and teachings of gurus. Thus, Guru Purnima serves as a day to acknowledge and appreciate the significance of gurus in one's life.

Overall, Guru Purnima is a festival that not only pays tribute to gurus but also highlights the importance of learning, education, and spiritual growth. It serves as a reminder to all individuals to be grateful for the knowledge and guidance they have received throughout their lives.
