German Ambassador to India Philipp Ackermann said on Wednesday that talks are going to take place between German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Prime Minister Narendra Modi later this week. The Russia-Ukraine conflict and China's increasing aggression in the Indo-Pacific region will be major topics on its agenda. He said Germany has also approached India to support a UN General Assembly resolution calling for an immediate end to the war in Ukraine and a lasting peace there. The German Chancellor's two-day visit to India, which begins on Saturday, will focus on enhancing cooperation in areas such as trade, climate change, clean energy and skilled manpower. Apart from this, he will also discuss global challenges.
"We see the Russia-Ukraine war very high on the agenda in the meeting between German Chancellor Scholz and Prime Minister Modi. It will be an important part of the agenda," Ackermann told a media briefing. Describing the current international situation as "very difficult", Ackermann said Germany considers India a "very influential and valuable partner" in considering these issues. "We will continue to help Ukraine defend its territory," he said. Russia is amazed by the unity and strategic fortitude of the West." Asked whether the issue of China's aggressive behavior in the Indo-Pacific and other regions would figure in the talks, he said this topic would also top the agenda. On whether it would be disappointing for Germany if India did not support the upcoming UN General Assembly resolution on Ukraine, the ambassador said it was for India to decide in this regard.
