Ganga Floods in Varanasi: 84 Ghats Submerged, 6,000 People Displaced
The Ganga touched a height of 71.66 metres on Sunday according to the Central Water Commission.

On Sunday, the water level of Ganga in Varanasi crossed the danger mark of 71.26 and inundated all the 84 ghats besides flooding over 24 localities and over 32 villages in Varanasi district.
Majority of the people who have been displaced by the flooding in the district are roughly 6,583 people and many are forced to move to other safer places such as floods relief and other shelter camps.

The level of Ganga flow was recorded at 71.66 metres on Sunday according to Central Water Commission. Consequently, 14 steps of Ganga Dwar at Baba Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple got covered underwater. Sculptures put in place in Namo Ghat are also flooded. The flow of water has entered the road at Assi Ghat and come close to Jagannath Temple Gate. Police have erected barricades in the town to face the influx of people.
The flood has resulted in the effects of 32 villages namely Ramchandipur, Rampur Dhab, and shivdasa and 24 urban centers such as Salarpur, Daniyalpur and Dashashwamedh Ghat. More than 1,469 of the farmers have lost 327.89 hectares of lands used in Agriculture due to flooding. Up to now, 6,583 individuals have been displaced 1,182 in the rural and 5,361 in the urban areas. The district has established 20 relief camps in order to accommodate residents who have been affected.
The increase in the water level in the rivers Ganga and Varuna has negatively affected thousands of people in lowlands. The Varuna increased to 12 feet on Saturday in a seven hour period, furthering the flood situation.

Eight boats have been launched by the NDRF and 42 by the district administration to distribute flood relief kits, packets of Oralva Rehydration Solution (ORS) and meals. The 17,137 packets of food distributed to flood victims were done over the weekend (last Sunday alone).
“Instructions have been issued to operate the relief camps at full capacity and to deploy both male and female constables there,” said district magistrate Satyendra Kumar. On Sunday he paid a visit to flood-affected areas in the morning and gave chocolates to children at a relief camp in Saraiya.
Together with this, he said that a directive has been given to host a campaign of continuous spraying of anti-larve, fogging and lime in waterlogged areas. Officials have also been ordered to make contact with the residents of affected areas and attend to them.
