Cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan, who is the Prime Minister of Pakistan, has become the first world leader to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin after the latter announced military action against its neighbouring state Ukraine.
The heads of two states are expected to discuss a range of bilateral issues as well as regional and international matters in a face to face meeting. Khan is the first PM from Pakistan who is visiting Russia in 23 years. His visit is being seen as an endorsement of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Dr Arslan Khalid, the Prime Minister's Focal Person on Digital Media, had earlier dismissed reports published in a section of media saying that Khan has cancelled his trip due to current development.
However, Department of State Spokesperson Ned Price in Washington, said that the US has already conveyed its stand to Islamabad on Russia's renewed invasion of Ukraine. Price also said that it was the responsibility of every country to voice objections to Russia's military actions.
When asked about Imran Khan’s visit to Russia, Price said, “Well, we are certainly aware of the trip. We have communicated to Pakistan our position regarding Russia's further renewed invasion of Ukraine, and we have briefed them on our efforts to pursue diplomacy over war."
"We believe it's the responsibility of every responsible country around the world to voice concern, to voice objection to what Putin appears to have in mind for Ukraine," He said.
