Eleven institutions have been notified under the World Class Institutions Scheme: Govt
About five years ago, the Modi government had launched this scheme under which it decided to provide financial assistance and academic autonomy to some shortlisted institutions to make them world-class

The Education Ministry has informed that it has issued notifications for eleven institutions under the World Class Institutions Scheme that was started in 2017. While eight of these are government colleges, three belongs to private players.
The Minister of State for Education, Dr Subhas Sarkar informed the Rajya Sabha on December 15 in a written reply.
About five years ago, the Modi government had launched this scheme under which it decided to provide financial assistance and academic autonomy to some shortlisted institutions to make them world-class.
Besides offering quality education at home, it also aims at attracting meritorious students from other countries in India. The government is also hopeful that these initiatives will reverse the process of brain drain. It is of the view that these institutes of eminence will discourage the students from going abroad to study in other prestigious institutions.
“The Government of India has launched the World Class Institutions Scheme in the year 2017 to enable ten institutions each from the public and private category to have world-class academic & research facilities and grant them the status of Institution of Eminence (IoE),” Dr Sarkar said.
He added, “So far, notifications have been issued for eleven institutions (08 public & 03 private). A significant amount of autonomy in academic, administrative & financial matters has been provided under the regulatory framework to these institutions so that they can emerge as global educational institutions.”
The scheme has a provision for financial assistance of up to Rs. 1000 Crore (over a period of five years) by the Government to each of public Institutions of Eminence.
