Elephant Deaths in Odisha: 3 Electrocuted by Poaching Trap for Wild Boars Keywords

Elephant Deaths in Odisha: On Monday, in the Buramal area of the Naktideul forest range in Sambalpur, three dead elephants, including a young one, were found. They had been killed by electric traps illegally set up by poachers who were trying to catch wild boars.

Local people discovered the dead elephants and informed the forest officials, who quickly came to inspect the area. Initial reports confirmed that the traps were meant to kill wild boars, but they ended up killing the elephants instead.

People in the area are very upset and blame the forest department for not watching over the area properly. They say that even though elephants often pass through the region, the department has not done enough to stop poachers from setting up illegal traps.

Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife), Susanta Nanda, acknowledged shortcomings in vigilance. “Preliminary reports confirm illegal electric wires set by poachers electrocuted the elephants. This is a heartbreaking incident, and I humbly admit there was negligence on the part of the patrolling team and officials,” he said.

Nanda, a concerned person, pointed out that even after a recent elephant count in the area, there were still lapses in patrolling. He believes both the forest and electricity departments should be held responsible for not preventing these illegal traps and called for action to stop future incidents.

This incident has also brought back demands for stronger actions against poachers, better monitoring of elephant paths, and more involvement from the community in protecting wildlife. In response, the forest department has promised to improve patrolling, remove illegal traps, and work with locals to keep wildlife safe.

The death of these elephants is a significant setback for wildlife conservation efforts in Odisha, but officials say they will take strong steps to prevent such events from happening again.
