Electricity can be costlier by Rs 1 unit in Uttar Pradesh

After the increase in the price of petrol-diesel, CNG and domestic gas cylinders in Uttar Pradesh, now electricity can also become costlier by Rs 1 unit. The reason is that after the domestic coal reserves are exhausted, electricity will be generated from foreign coal. The cost of which will have to be paid ten times more.

The production of electricity in the state can be expensive by Rs 1 per unit because of the use of Expensive Foreign CoalThe Electricity Consumer Council has questioned the reply filed in the Regulatory Commission regarding the cost of electricity by 70 paise per unit due to the purchase of 10 percent foreign coal by the Vidyut Utpadan Nigam.

The council says that the corporation has estimated the cost per unit on the basis of January's rate, while foreign coal has become costlier by about one and a half thousand rupees per tonne during the three months. Meanwhile, the state government instead of granting permission sought by the generating corporation regarding the purchase of foreign coal has asked that the corporation should take its own decision keeping in mind the public interest of the people.

The Council President said that the cost of production of electricity is rising up to Rs 1 per unit, so there should be an immediate ban on buying foreign coal and this should be discussed in the meeting of the State Advisory Committee. Verma said that in the report of the Technical Committee constituted by the Central Electricity Authority on the issue of buying foreign coal in the year 2012, it was clearly said that the plant should be upgraded first.
