On the face of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and the strength of her work, TMC is confident of victory in the civic elections as well. Kolkata and Howrah civic polls will be conducted by the Election Commission on December 19.
The State Election Commission on Tuesday approved the proposal of the West Bengal government to hold elections to the municipal corporations of Kolkata and neighboring Howrah on December 19. An official of the State Election Commission said,"Kolak".
BJP's West Bengal unit vice-president Pratap Banerjee said a party delegation had met the state election commission on Monday and demanded that elections be held simultaneously in all municipalities and corporations. The Bharatiya Janata Party said it is in consultation with lawyers to approach the Calcutta High Court seeking directions to hold elections in one go to all municipal corporations and municipalities in West Bengal where elections are held.
The Trinamool Congress accused the BJP of adopting double standards and said that when it had demanded holding of assembly elections in a single phase, the BJP supported holding elections in eight phases.
