Strong tremors were felt in the greater Bangkok area, which is home to more than 17 million people, many of whom live in high-rise apartments.

Startled residents poured out of high-rise condominiums and hotels in densely populated central Bangkok. They remained in the streets, seeking shade from the midday sun in the minutes after the quake.
Thailand's Department of Disaster Prevention said the quake was felt in almost all regions of the country. According to AFP, at least 43 workers were trapped after the 30-storey under construction skyscraper collapsed in Bangkok.
The quake damaged several religious shrines and homes in Myanmar's capital Naypyidaw.
A resident of Yangon in southern Myanmar shared their experience of the earthquake with CNN.
“It was excessively shaky and persisted for three to four minutes,” the resident told CNN. “The building where my house was unstable.”

“Electricity is unavailable - but normally we only have less than 12 hr of it daily basis,” the resident added.
Significant damage has been reported in Myanmar’s Sagaing and Mandalay regions.
Meanwhile, a resident in Chiang Mai, Thailand, also spoke to CNN, recounting their experience, "I felt it for about 10 seconds in my room then I figured out I couldn’t stay inside. So I rushed out onto the street.”
Video posted online from both countries showed panicked residents running from swaying residential towers as dust fills the air, and traffic suddenly stops on busy city streets.
The Stock Exchange of Thailand suspended all trading activities for the afternoon session on Friday after a strong earthquake struck neighbouring Myanmar, the tremors of which were felt in Thailand's capital, Bangkok, reported Reuters.
A 30-storey skyscraper under construction for government offices collapsed in Bangkok on Friday, trapping 43 workers, police and medics said. The building in the north of the Thai capital was reduced to a tangle of rubble and twisted metal in seconds.
