Earth Day 2025: Today, Tuesday, April 22, countries all over the world come together to commemorate World Earth Day, which will be celebrated for the 55th year running in 2025.
This year's theme is “Our Power, Our Planet“, to achieve the “triple clean electricity” target by 2030 through the usage of renewable energy.
The campaign emphasises how urgent it is to combat climate change by reducing reliance on fossil fuels and investing in an inclusive, equitable, and sustainable future energy system.
Earth Day: History
The first Earth Day was celebrated in 1970, when industries were releasing smoke and sludge without much concern about the legal or public repercussions. Air pollution was seen as the "smell of prosperity" at the time, particularly in America.
Earth Day was founded in 1970 by Senator Gaylord Nelson of the United States of America and has been observed every year on April 22 since then.
At that inaugural Earth Day, more than 20 million Americans took part, calling for healthier surroundings, cleaner water, and air.

The United States passed historic laws, including the Clean Water Act, the Clean Air Act, and the establishment of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as a direct result of Earth Day's success. One of the biggest secular celebrations worldwide, Earth Day is now recognised in more than 190 nations.
Significance of the Earth Day

Raising environmental consciousness among all age groups
Encouraging policy reforms that promote sustainability
Inspiring climate action, reforestation, clean energy adoption, and waste reduction
Reminding us that the health of the planet is directly linked to our health
