The bizarre controversy cropped up after Washington Post reported that the National Archive wants an investigation over Trump’s habit of destroying official papers which included communication with leaders of other countries. The Archive has a legal mandate to preserve presidential records.
According to the Washington Post, the Archive has written to the US Justice Department to initiate an investigation on Trump’s whimsical way of functioning.
The US law - Presidential Records Act (PRA) - which was passed in 1978 after the Watergate scandal – says that US presidents must transfer all official documents and communication including emails, letters etc to the National Archives for the sake of preserving them as records.
On the other hand, Donald Trump has denied all these allegations and called the whole allegations fake news. He even disputed the fact that he had a strenuous relationship with the National Archives.
"The media's characterization of my relationship with NARA (National Archives) is Fake News. It was exactly the opposite! It was a great honor to work with NARA to help formally preserve the Trump Legacy," he said in an official statement.
“Also, another fake story, that I flushed papers and documents down a White House toilet, is categorically untrue and simply made up by a reporter in order to get publicity for a mostly fictitious book," his statement read further.
