Twitter Inc has received sharp criticism after it permanently banned outgoing US President Donald Trump from using the microblogging site.
Facebook and Instagram have also taken similar action and barred the President from using these permanently.
Many Indian intellectuals have taken to their Twitter handles and said that they expect similar action in hate speeches in India also.
There have been numerous instances where politicians, workers, and activists of different ideologies have allegedly made hate and communal statements and propagated the same using microblogging and social networking sites.
However, neither Twitter nor Facebook has taken any action against them like it did in the case of President Trump.
Mahua Moitra, Lok Sabha Member from Krishnanagar, West Bengal for All India Trinamool Congress wrote on her Twitter handle @MahuaMoitra, “Facebook/instagram ban Trump indefinitely for using platform to incite violence.”
“When can we expect the same standards & action against hate/fake news mongerers in India, Mr. Zuckerberg? Or are the risks to your business too great?” Moitra questioned in her tweet.

Or are the risks to your business too great?
Former news anchor Nidhi Razdan, who recently left journalism to teach at Harvard University, wrote, “Twitter and Facebook don’t deserve any praise for taking on Trump and his hate speech. They only acted after he lost and after Democrats gained control of the Senate.”
“Let’s see these platforms act decisively against hate speech in the rest of the world including India,” she added.
Comedian and Actor Vir Das has also mocked Twitter for taking action after protest and violence at Capitol Hill.
He wrote, “Well done guys. It's always a good idea to wear a safety belt right after the car has crashed.
