Delhi Air Quality Dips to ‘Very Poor’ After Diwali: AQI Crosses 380 in Multiple Areas

Delhi air quality after Diwali: The National capital began the start of the November month with very poor air quality on Friday. After Delhi people burst firecrackers Deepavali night despite the restriction from the authorities, the air pollution on Friday, November 1, 2024 morning rose by 14 times than the World Health Organization (WHO) prediction.

The AQI in Delhi at 7 am was 361 which is an significant increased compared to previous day’s AQI of 328.

Compared to the AQI record of the last three years on Diwali day, the AQI record this year was worse. According to the CPCB data, the air quality report in 2023 was 218 while in 2022 the AQI was 312 and in 2021 the air quality was 382.

As per the official reports, an AQI ranges from 0 and 50 is believed to be good, 51 and 100 is considered satisfactory, 101 and 200 moderate, 201 and 300 poor, 301 and 400 very poor, and 401 and 500 is considered severe.

Reports from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) showed that in the several parts of the Delhi, the AQI was over 380 while it got increased above 390 and was near 400 in others parts of the national capital. According to the official reports, the AQI in RK Puram was 398.

Reuters reported that the Swiss company IQ Air reports stated that the Delhi air quality index stood at 348 marking it in the "hazardous" category and made the national capital the world's most polluted city in real time basis.

The Delhi government last month announced a ban over all types of firecrackers until January 1, 2025. To execute this, the government banned all manufacture, storage and selling including delivery through online marketing platforms.

Despite the ban, people still burst firecrackers on Diwali night which led to the increase in pollution rate on Friday’s morning. The Delhi Fire Department reported that they got the most number of calls this year compared to past 10 years.

ANI reported quoting the Delhi Fire Services that the total number increased to 320 till November 1 and 3 deaths and 12 injuries were reported after more than hundreds of calls on Diwali night.
