Delay in surgery increases the risk of Covid-19 among obese patients

The spread of Covid-19 infection has impacted the health care system so severely that most people have postponed their treatment and surgeries for various other diseases.

They fear that if they visit hospitals, they might contract the virus as hospitals are the most infectious place due to the visit of all types of patients.

Besides patients with cancer, kidney failure, and other diseases, obese patients are also postponing bariatric surgery which is further complicating their health issues, according to senior doctors.

Bariatric surgery not only controls obesity but also helps an obese person get his immune system strengthened to fight several other diseases.

Health experts say that postponement of bariatric surgery makes a patient prone to several other diseases. It also makes them vulnerable to Covid-19.

According to a recent report by the New York University Grossman School of Medicine, obese people are at a higher risk of contracting Covid-19 as compared to various types of cancer patients.

Pradeep Choubey, a well-known doctor of metabolic and bariatric surgery says that obese patients carry a high risk for several other diseases such as hypertension, type-2 diabetes, cardiovascular, and respiratory.

He says that if obese people contract the Covid-19, they develop more complications and complain of severe swelling and burning of the lungs.

He advises obese patients not to postpone their surgeries as it can prove to be extremely dangerous.

Many other health experts also say that doctors should give proper advice to obese patients and encourage them to go for surgery.

They say that hospitals are taking all precautions to maintain hygiene and there is no Covid-19 risk in visiting hospitals.
