Darbhanga-Bound Train Collides with Goods Carriage Near Chennai: Official Explains Cause

Darbhanga-Bound Train Collides: Mysuru-Darbhanga Bagmati Express derailed after colliding with stationary goods train at Kavaraippettai Railway Station in Tiruvallur district of Tamil Nadu’s Chennai division of Southern Railway on Friday night. The train, which was running from Mysuru to Darbhanga entered the loop line where the goods train was parked and collided with it, said officials.
Southern Railway General Manager RN Singh explained to reporters, “This train was going towards Gudur and further to Andhra Pradesh, and via Odisha it would have gone to Darbhanga after starting from Mysuru. As it passed through Kavaraippettai, a goods train was stabled on the loop line, which was given precedence.”

He added, “This train was supposed to pass through the main line without stopping, as there is no scheduled stop at this station. Signals were also provided for the main line. However, it was unusual that despite having signals for the main line, the train entered the loop line where the goods train was standing.”
The collision occurred when the express train hit the goods train from behind and the engine derailed. Luckily the loco pilot and assistant loco pilot are safe and after recording their statements they have been relieved from duty.
Railway, fire department, railway police, state police and ambulances with railway doctors reached the spot along with senior officials. GM Singh said there were no fatalities and the injured were rushed to nearby hospitals.

Total 19 passengers were injured in the collision which occurred at 8:30 PM on Chennai-Gudur section between Ponneri and Kavaraippettai stations. 12 coaches of the passenger train derailed. T. Prabhushankar, Tiruvallur District Collector told ANI, “The passenger train collided with a goods train. There were 1,360 passengers on board. We reached the spot immediately after we got the information. Chief Minister MK Stalin has instructed us to start the rescue operation without delay. As per his instructions we made sure all passengers were evacuated safely.”
He further noted, “There were no casualties. Nineteen individuals sustained injuries, with four suffering severe injuries. They were taken to the hospital and are currently stable. Our focus remains on the well-being of the rescued passengers. Cooked meals have been arranged on the CM's orders.”
Dilip Kumar, Executive Director (Information & Publicity), Railway Board confirmed that the accident involved 12578 Bagmati Express which runs from Mysuru to Darbhanga.
“Relief and rescue operations began promptly. All passengers have been evacuated from the train. No fatalities or severe injuries have been reported, and over 90 percent of passengers have been evacuated,” Kumar said.
Train movement was affected in the section and several trains were diverted. More than 6 trains were diverted on Friday night and Railways has issued helpline numbers.
