D Gukesh vs Magnus Carlsen: Six months after winning the title of FIDE World Championship, D Gukesh is finally returning to classical chess, and he now faces as tough a challenge as he could hope for. For his first game since his thrilling Game 14 victory as World Champion over Ding Liren in Singapore, Gukesh faces Magnus Carlsen - without question the greatest player ever to play the game - at the Norway Chess tournament in Stavanger.

Gukesh made history as the youngest world champion, and is regarded by many as the brightest prospect in classical chess, known for his ultra-sharp calculation. However, he will be facing Carlsen, a five-times world champion, and generally regarded as the greatest classical chess player of all time. Carlsen has recently reduced his activities in the classical format to pursue other interests, though he is still the top seed and favourite in his own country.

In their Day 1 match up, Carlsen will have the white pieces, giving him the first move versus Gukesh playing black pieces.

This high-profile match-up headlines the opening day of the tournament. In other news, India's Arjun Erigaisi will face Chinese Grandmaster Wei Yi, and Fabiano Caruana will go up against fellow American GM Hikaru Nakamura, in what is an all-American matchup.

Carlsen and Gukesh last played when the Norwegian knocked the Indian out of the 2023 FIDE World Cup quarter-final stage, winning with the score of 1.5-0.5. Gukesh has had three draws with Carlsen in classical games and lost just once, and now he wants to beat the Norwegian legend.
