Dr.Cyrus Poonawalla was a horse breeder’s son and now one of the richest in the country. In 1966 he founded Serum Institute of India which is famous for its work during COVID-19 pandemic as one of the main vaccine manufacturers in the country.
The institute also produces 1.5 billion doses of vaccines for polio, flu and measles every year, according to GQ India. He got a Padma Bhushan, one of the highest civilian awards in the country in 2022 for his work in creating and distributing vaccines.

The Lincoln House in Breach Candy, Mumbai is a luxury sea facing bungalow owned by industrialist Cyrus Poonawalla. In 2015 Poonawalla bought this iconic property from the US government for ₹750 crore, one of the most expensive real estate deals in India.
In fact SII is the world’s largest vaccine manufacturer producing more vaccines than any other company in the world. The company is now headed by Cyrus’s son Adar Poonawalla who has expanded the family business into various other sectors.
According to 2024 Hurun India Rich List, Cyrus Poonawalla as the chairman and managing director of Cyrus Poonawalla Group has a net worth of ₹2,89,900 crore, SII is worth ₹2,04,300 crore.

Apart from SII he also has major stake in Poonawalla Fincorp, a non banking financial company into consumer and MSME financing and The Ritz-Carlton hotel in Pune. He also has a large farm where they breed prize winning horses just like his father Soli Poonawalla.
One of the crown jewels of his empire is his luxury sea facing bungalow in Breach Candy, Mumbai which he bought in 2015 from the US government for ₹750 crore, one of the most expensive real estate deals in India.
Continuing the family legacy, his son Adar Poonawalla has expanded the business further and has even entered the film industry by buying 50% stake in Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions for ₹1,000 crore. Adar’s foray into film production shows the Poonawalla family’s growing presence across sectors.
His father Soli Poonawalla was a horse breeder. Cyrus married Villoo Poonawalla who passed away in 2010. Natasha Poonawalla is married to Adar Poonawalla, CEO of Serum Institute of India and they have two kids. She is the Executive Director of Poonawalla Group which includes Serum Institute of India, the world’s largest vaccine manufacturer.
