Congress party yet again defers elections for party president

Due to the Covid-19 crisis sweeping the country with its devastating second wave of infections, the Congress political party has agreed on Monday to postpone internal elections to elect a new party leader for the time being.

The Congress Working Committee (CWC), which convened a meeting to discuss the outcome of the recent assembly elections, passed a resolution directing party workers' efforts at saving lives and assisting every coronavirus-affected individual.

Senior leaders including Ashok Gehlot, Ghulam Nabi Azad, and Anand Sharma stated no reason of urgency in holding the party president election at present time due to the condition generated by Covid-19 during a meeting on the election process for the party's next president.

Senior Congress party members such as Ghulam Nabi Azad, Anand Sharma, Shashi Tharoor, and Kapil Sibal have previously lobbied for the election of a party president who can provide “effective leadership” to the party which in desperate need of an anchor man who can steer the party’s stars.

The Congress party had earlier agreed that the task of electing a new party chief will be completed by the end of June, but the current status quo of the country has prevented from that to happen.

This will be a third time that the Congress Working Committee has shelved the election process for its party leader.Since Rahul Gandhi quit from the post after the defeat in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the position of Congress president has remained vacated.

The Congress high command addressed the Covid-19 condition as well as the party's disappointing results in the recent assembly elections. Sonia Gandhi, the interim president of the Congress, recognised the need to reflect on the party's repeated losses in assembly elections, saying that "there is a need to put the house in order."

Mrs. Gandhi has stated that she plans to form a small committee to investigate all of the factors that contributed to Congress' latest polling failure.
