Waqf Bill 2025: The Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025 has been challenged at the Supreme Court by Congress MP Mohammad Jawed and AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi.

The Waqf bill was passed in Rajya Sabha on Thursday. It was approved by 128 members and opposed by 95 members. The same bill was passed in Lok Sabha in April 3' early hours with the support of 288 members and opposed by 232 members.

According to PTI, in filing a plea against the bill, Congress MP stated that it is "arbitrary imposition of restrictions" on Waqf properties and their management and destroys religious autonomy of the Muslim community.

The petition filed according to advocate Anas Tanwir said that the bill is discriminating against the Muslim community "by putting restrictions which are not there in the governance of other religious endowments."⁣/p>

Owaisi, the same parliamentarian also contended that the provisions of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025, "brazenly infringe the fundamental rights of Muslims and the Muslim community", according to Live Law.

This morning, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh declared his party would also soon file a plea in the Supreme Court against this Bill's constitutionality, the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024.

In his statement given to ANI, Jawed said, "Several people in India will file this petition, several parties will do this. In the Parliament, everyone in the Opposition said that this is unconstitutional. This is a religious body - you are providing freedom to non-Muslims. How can you snatch away our right? How can you do this violation? If you have numbers, it doesn't mean you get passed anything you passed and do something unlawful...We have challenged this. We hope that Supreme Court will take cognisance of this and this will be repealed (Bill) at the earliest."

“The INC will very soon be challenging in the Supreme Court the constitutionality of the Wakf (Amendment) Bill, 2024. We are confident and will continue to resist all assaults of the Modi Govt on the principles, provisions, and practices that are contained in the Constitution of India,” Jairam Ramesh wrote on X.

Ramesh also said that the Supreme Court is hearing cases on CAA, amendments to the Right to Information Act, 2005, in 2019, validity of the existing amendments to Conduct of Election Rules (2024), and also intervenes with respect to the letter and spirit of the Places of Worship Act, 1991.
