Congress in Uttar Pradesh seems to be taking the right step. The way the party first started a women-centric campaign and then announced about 40% women candidates out of the 125 announced so far, the party has been successful in creating some stir in the state.
In the 2017 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, when the Congress party contested 114 seats in alliance with the Samajwadi Party, it came down heavily. In that election, the party could garner only seven seats in the entire state with a vote share of just 6 per cent. But that was also an election in which other parties had also fallen down due to the BJP wave. All of them were shocked.
There are indications that this time the election of Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly may be more competitive than last time. For this reason, the Congress may have a chance to strengthen its base in the state.
