Bijapur police had previously claimed that fire exchanges were happening between the Naxals and security forces in a jungle under Gangaloor Police Station.
On Saturday, around 8.30 am, a gunfight broke out between the Naxals and the joint forces when they were on anti-Naxal operations in the forest, as reported by a senior police officer to the PTI reporter.
“More details were awaited as the operation was still underway,” he said.
"Personnel of the District Reserve Guard and Special Task Force of the state police along with the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and its elite unit CoBRA (Commando Battalion for Resolute Action) were involved in the operation," the official said.
The operation on Friday was based on information regarding the movement of cadres of the "West Bastar" division of Maoists regarding an area, he added.
Earlier on Friday, ten Naxalites, five with a composite reward of ₹6 lakh on their heads, had formally surrendered in Bijapur district of Chhattisgarh, police said.
