Responding to heavy rains that began on Monday night, the District Collector declared a rain holiday for the schools in the city on Tuesday.
An earlier announcement said that schools would open, but the ruling was retracted within half an hour as the intensity of the rainfall and the prognosis for continued bad weather proved too intense.
The alternative working day for the lost school day will be later announced.

In view of the heavy rain forecast, a holiday has been declared for all schools in Chennai today, said Chennai Collector Rashmi Siddharth Zagade.
Heavy rains are likely to continue at some places in several districts including Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, a few places in Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai and Puducherry, said the India Meteorological Department.
Heavy rainfall has already been reported in parts of Tiruvallur city, according to the IMD, the rain was triggered by a low-pressure area formed over the Bay of Bengal.
In their report on Wednesday, the cyclonic circulation over the Southwest Bay of Bengal persisted at around 5.8 km above mean sea level, tilting southwest towarsds, a low-pressure area will likely form over the region within the next 24 hours, moving westward towards the Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka coasts over the following two days.
Rain update: The authorities are constantly monitoring the weather condition and asking people to exercise caution as it may continue to bring rain showers in affected areas.

Moderate to heavy rainfall with thundershowers and lightning over some places, maximum temperature will be around 32°C-33°C and minimum temperature around 25°C, the bulletin stated. Skies may be partly cloudy for the next 48 hours.
Official from IMD has warned that heavy rainfall may start from November 12 in Tiruvallur to Ramanathapuram coastal areas and gradually spread into neighboring regions by the day of November 13.
