The central government is preparing to appoint senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi as Attorney General once again. Actually, the exercise to appoint the 16th Attorney General is going on. This will be Rohatgi's second term as AG after his first term between June 2014 and June 2017. Actually, the tenure of the present AG Venugopal is being completed on 30 September. At the end of June this year, the tenure of AG Venugopal was extended by three months or "till further orders". This is now going to end on 30 September. Venugopal was appointed as Attorney General on July 1, 2017 for a three-year term, which was later extended twice by one year.
Venugopal had replaced Rohatgi as the Attorney General in June 2017. Then the Modi government did not want to give an extension of 2 years to Rohatgi after the completion of his 3 year term. Rohatgi was very close to late BJP leader and former finance minister Arun Jaitley. In 2014, he was made Attorney General after the BJP formed an absolute majority government led by Narendra Modi.
However, Rohatgi resigned in the second week of June in 2017 after sensing the government's stand not granting the extension and returned to private practice. He is among the top 5 lawyers of the Supreme Court and can very rarely compete with him in matters of fees.
