Both CBSE and ICSE boards have today declared that the Class 12th Board Examination for the current year is being cancelled. The announcement was made through a communique issued from the PMO.

The announcement post a review meeting chaired by Prime Minister today, said, “In view of the uncertain conditions due to COVID and the feedback obtained from various stakeholders, it was decided that Class XII Board Exams would not be held this year.”

The decision on the cancellation of Class 12 CBSE Exams was attributed to the immense anxiety amongst students, parents and teachers, which must be put to an end, since COVID-19 has affected the academic calendar.

It was also decided that CBSE will take steps to compile the results of class XII students as per a well-defined objective criteria in a time-bound manner. The decision to do away with the exam comes just two days ahead of a crucial Supreme Court hearing on the matter. The court had, on May 31, adjourned the hearing to June 3 after the Centre had sought more time.

“Covid situation is a dynamic situation across the country. While the numbers are coming down in the country and some states are managing the situation through effective micro-containment, some states have still opted for a lockdown. Students, parents and teachers are naturally worried about the health of the students in such a situation. PM said that students should not be forced to appear for exams in such a stressful situation,” says the Press Release from PMO.

Health and safety of students, was quoted time and again, being of utmost importance and there would be no compromise on the aspect. Such exams cannot be the reason to put the youth at risk. Sensitivity for students was also requested and officials were directed to ensure results are prepared in accordance with well-defined criteria, in a fair and time-bound manner.

It was also decided that like last year, in case some students desire to take the exams, such an option would be provided to them by CBSE, as and when the situation becomes conducive.

Many students, guardians, teachers have took to social media to show their happiness on the decision. Many celebrities and politicians have also congratulated the students on the good news.
