CBFC Historian Defends Kangana Ranaut Emergency Film: Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) Historian Makkhan Lal defended Kangana Ranaut’s political biopic ‘Emergency’ in a recent chat with India Today.
The CBFC appointed Makkhan Lal as ‘subject expert’ for Kangana Ranaut’s political biopic film Emergency told India Today that the film does not put India’s former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in a negative light.

Kangana Ranaut Emergency truth
In an interview with India Today, the CBFC historian defends Emergency film, adding, “The film is entirely based on facts, and they haven’t altered the truth. I would say the filmmakers are very sympathetic to the issue depicted. While every political leader has flaws, the film does not show the negative aspects of Indira Gandhi’s character.”
Kangana Ranaut ‘Emergency’ film faced a lot of controversy and criticism after the release of its trailer. The criticism raised discussions about the Emergency movie historical accuracy and figures.
Currently, the director and others are waiting for the certification from the CBFC on Kangana’s Emergency film. However, CBFC has already filed an affidavit to the Bombay High Court stating that the film can be released with cuts. The affidavit also includes Kangana Ranaut Emergency CBFC historian Makkhan Lal's name as the subject expert.

The objection against the film was raised by the members of the Sikh community after CBFC set up a review group. Makkhan Lal who the CBFC appointed as the ‘subject expert’ denied those concerns, especially about the portrayed of Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale in the film.
Makkhan Lal added, “Does Bhindranwale represent the entire Sikh community? If so, why do other figures from the community, such as former Congress Chief Minister Beant Singh or Parkash Singh Badal, differ from him? Why is criticizing Bhindranwale seen as an insult to the Sikh community? Who shot Mrs Indira Gandhi? If they were Sikhs, that is a fact. How can this be denied?”

The film was set to release on September 6 but was postponed because it couldn’t get the certification from CBFC. The film is directed by Kangana Ranaut and the first trailer of the film was released on August 14. Kangana Ranaut's film ‘Emergency’ also features famous stars such as Anupam Kher, Mahima Chaudhry, Shreyas Talpade, Vishakh Nair, Milind Somanand the late Satish Kaushik.
