5631 new cases of corona virus have been found in Mumbai on Friday, which is almost double the 3671 positive cases found on Thursday. In Dharavi, Asia's biggest slum here, 34 cases have been found in the last 24 hours. The infection of the new variant Omicron is responsible for the rapid increase in the number of patients in the metropolis. There, Omicron is being confirmed in more than 50 percent of the samples sent for genome sequencing.
Officials of the Greater Mumbai Municipal Corporation said on Friday that 282 samples were sent in the 7th batch for genome sequencing. Omicron infection has been confirmed in 55% of these samples, while the dangerous delta variant has been found in only 13% of the patients. Delta derivatives are present in 32% of patients.
The good news is that out of 156 people in whom Omicron has been confirmed, only 9 have needed to be admitted to the hospital for treatment.
The speed of corona in Maharashtra is increasing towards dangerous levels. In Maharashtra, 8,067 positive cases have been found in the last 24 hours. 8 people have died, while 1,766 people have been cured. Omicron has also found 4 new patients in the state.
