BSF Jawan Detained by Pakistan Rangers After Inadvertently Crossing Border

A Border Security Force (BSF) constable has been apprehended by the Pakistan Rangers for having inadvertently crossed the international border in Punjab, says PTI, which cites unnamed officials in making that claim.

Constable PK Singh of the 182nd battalion was detained on account of his having crossed the international borders on Wednesday in the Ferozepur area. Negotiations are being carried out through established channels between (i.e.) the BSF and the Pakistan Rangers for the release of the constable, the report adds.

In uniform and armed, the jawan was accompanying a group of farmers when he stepped slightly forward to rest in the shadows; that was when the Rangers caught him.

According to PTI, a flag meeting is being held between the Border Security Force and the Pakistan Rangers to negotiate the safe release of the constable.

Further stating that these incidents are not new, the official said that both countries, in the past, witnessed similar incidents post their validation.

The latest incident has occurred in a milieu overshadowed by tension after the terror attack in Pahalgam, and thereafter India had to take retaliatory steps against the terrorism-oriented actions of Pakistan.

It could be noted that on Tuesday, terrorists killed 26 men at a beautiful tourist site in Kashmir, making it the most deadly attack on civilians in the country in almost two decades.

Thereafter, addressing a media briefing, Foreign secretary Vikram Misri mentioned that the cross-border aspects of the attack were discussed at a special meeting of the security cabinet, which led to action against Pakistan.

The Indus Waters Treaty was, among the steps taken, suspended immediately since that agreement is crucial concerning sharing of the Indus river system between the two countries.

Misri added that the defence advisers at the Pakistani high commission in New Delhi had been declared persona non grata and ordered to leave the country.

In an announcement, he also stated that the number of staff at the Indian high commission in Islamabad would be reduced from 55 to 30.
