Bombay HC in Kangana's case: If MCGM acts with similar swiftness, the city would be a different place

The Mumbai High Court, while hearing a petition filed by actress Kangana Ranaut, observed that if the MCGM would act with similar swiftness against the numerous unauthorized constructions in this City, the City would be a completely different place to live in.

Ranaut has challenged the demolition work carried out by the Municipal Corporation of Gr. Mumbai at her residence in Bandra (W) alleging unauthorised construction.

MCGM had given a notice to Ranaut on September 8 at 10 am to remove all unauthorised construction within 24 hours failing which the Corporation would demolish it.

Ranaut’s lawyer told the court that the MCGM moved its entire machinery the very next day and in the presence of several police officers, started carrying out the job of demolition by use of heavy machines.

Kangana’s lawyer alleged that by the time, the court took up the matter, 40% of the said premises was already demolished.

The court restrained the MCGM from carrying out any further demolition and asked it to file an affidavit.

“Though the manner in which the MCGM has proceeded to commence demolition work of the said Premises, prima facie does not appear to be bonafide and smacks of malafide, we are giving an opportunity to the MCGM to explain its stand / conduct on Affidavit by 3.00 p.m. tomorrow,” the court said.
