BJP leader and ex-Home Minister of Haryana turns down party post due to farmers’ agitation
Prof Sampat Singh refused state level Party position in BJP

A former state Home Minister and BJP leader from Haryana, Sampat Singh, expressed his inability in accepting a party state executive position keeping in view the ongoing farmers’ agitation.

The Haryana BJP leader Singh refused to accept his nomination to the party’s post saying “politics is impossible in a closed room and under police protection”. While expressing his gratitude for the honour, he refused to accept the nomination via a letter addressed to the state party president Om Prakash Dhankar.

He referred to several protests against BJP leaders in the state due to the protests following the passing of three farm laws. Singh referred to party leaders and ministers holding meetings under police protection due to anticipated threats. In the letter, Singh writes, “It is virtually impossible to conduct any meaningful political and party activity without heavy police deployment.”

Singh has stated that he has been in support of the farmers since the very beginning and has requested the party to resolve their issues with the farmers.

Singh is a six-time MLA who had joined the BJP ahead of the Assembly polls in the state recently after he was denied a ticket by Congress.

Singh had urged the Centre as early as January to give up its “adamant attitude” and repeal all three contentious Central farm laws.

Singh then had said, “These should be withdrawn and a new law guaranteeing the purchase of crops by the government at MSP should be brought in their place. When the government had been assuring that MSP would continue, there was no reason why a law should not be made for the same. By giving legal shape to MSP, the farmers would be assured that they would be able to sell their crops at the rates fixed by the government.”
