Bilkis Bano Case: Petition in SC against the release of 11 convicts of Bilkis Bano, were freed on August 15
The Gujarat government released the 11 convicts after the apex court directed it to consider their plea for relief under the state's 1992 exemption policy. On January 21, 2008, a special CBI court in Mumbai sentenced all 11 accused to life imprisonment for the murder and gangrape of 7 members of Bilkis Bano's family.
The Gujarat government's decision to release 11 convicts in the Bilkis Bano case on Independence Day has been challenged in the Supreme Court. In this petition, a request has been made to reconsider the sentence of all the convicts. Subhashini, Roop Rekha Verma and Revati Lal have filed this petition in the Supreme Court.
All the 11 life convicts in the Bilkis Bano gangrape case were released from the Godhra sub-jail on August 15. He was released under the Gujarat government's remission scheme. Raulji told a news portal, “We took the decision based on the Supreme Court order. We had to look into the conduct of the convicts and take a decision on their premature release." He said.
Raulji said that maybe the culprits have been framed. He said, “It is possible that he may have been implicated because of his family's past deeds. When such riots happen, it happens that the names of those who are not involved come up. But I don't know whether he committed the crime or not. We have waived the sentence on the basis of his conduct." When asked about the reception of those 11 who were released from jail, he said that he did not welcome them.
