Badlapur Sexual Assault Accused Killed: Sanjay Shinde, the police inspector who shot dead Badlapur sexual assault accused Akshay Shinde, has worked with suspended former ‘encounter specialist’ Pradeep Sharma in the past.

Akshay Shinde, 24, was accused of sexually assaulting two minor girls at a school in Badlapur town of Thane district. A contractual sweeper at the school in Badlapur, Akshay Shinde was arrested on August 17, five days after he allegedly sexually abused the two girls in the school toilet.

He was killed near Mumbra Bypass in Thane on Monday evening when he allegedly snatched the gun of a policeman while he was being taken in a police vehicle as part of a probe into a case registered against him on the complaint of his former wife, said an official.

After he shot and injured an assistant police inspector, another officer from the police escort team fired at him and he was declared dead by doctors at the Kalwa civic hospital, said the official.

Akshay Shinde was being taken to Badlapur from Taloja jail for investigation. In the firing, Sanjay Shinde and assistant police inspector Nilesh More were injured.

India Today reported that Sanjay Shinde had worked with the anti-extortion cell of the Thane Police Crime Branch, earlier headed by Pradeep Sharma. He was part of the team that arrested gangster Dawood Ibrahim’s brother Iqbal Kaskar.

Pradeep Sharma was known as an ‘encounter specialist’ in the Mumbai Police, who had eliminated over 100 criminals during his career. He joined the force in 1983 and became prominent in the 1990s for his role in high profile encounters against Mumbai underworld members, especially those linked to Dawood Ibrahim and Chhota Rajan.

However, Sharma was later convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment for his role in the 2006 fake encounter of Lakhan Bhaiya, who was a former aide of Chhota Rajan.

Sanjay Shinde who is also a Mumbai Police officer is part of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) set up by the Maharashtra government to investigate the Badlapur rape case.

Sanjay Shinde was suspended and an inquiry was ordered against him after murder accused Vijay Palande escaped from police custody, India Today reported. He was accused of helping Palande escape as the two were friends and Shinde’s uniform was found in Palande’s car.

In 2014, Shinde was reinstated by the Mumbai Police.

Maharashtra CID will probe Akshay Shinde’s death, PTI reported.

A team of forensic science experts on Tuesday examined the police vehicle in which Akshay Shinde was allegedly shot by the cop.

Since it’s a death in police custody, it will be investigated by the Maharashtra CID, said an official on Tuesday.

A CID team will visit the Mumbra bypass spot where the incident took place, he said, will also record the statements of police personnel who were in the vehicle at that time.
