Assam's NRC data updating process at risk of tampering, CAG report says.
The CAG on Saturday submitted a report for the year ended 2020 on the last day of the winter session of the Assam Legislative Assembly, stating that 215 "software utilities" were added to the core software "in a haphazard manner".

The Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) has reported a "data mismatch" in Assam's National Register of Citizens (NRC) for not being able to properly develop software for data collection and correction during the process of updating citizenship documents. Warned about the "danger of tampering". According to the CAG, the process of updating the NRC needed to develop a highly secure and reliable software, but the audit revealed "absence of proper planning in this regard".
The updated final NRC for Assam was released on August 31, 2019, which included a total of 3,11,21,004 names out of 3,30,27,661 applicants. However, it is yet to be notified. The CAG on Saturday submitted a report for the year ended 2020 on the last day of the winter session of the Assam Legislative Assembly, stating that 215 "software utilities" were added to the core software "in a haphazard manner".
"This was done without following due process for developing the software or selecting the vendor through eligibility assessment following a national tender process," the report said. Accountability could be ensured for the correctness of the NRC data.
