Wimbledon 2021: Sania and Bopanna into second round after a win over Ankita and Ramkumar
It was the first time in the open era that two Indian teams competed in a Grand Slam tournament against each other.
In the first round of the 2018 Wimbledon Championships, Sania Mirza and her mixed doubles partner Rohan Bopanna overcame countrymen, Ankita Raina and Ramkumar Ramanathan. Sania and Bopanna defeated Ankita and Ramanathan 6-2, 7-6 in two sets.
The opening set was rather easy for the seasoned duo, as they easily won by a large margin. In the second set, though, Ankita and Ramanathan gave it their best, and Sania and Bopanna had to fight hard to win.
Sania and her partner gained 69 points, 11 more than their opponents, in the all-Indian competition, which lasted one hour and nine minutes.
Sania Mirza and Bethanie Mattek-Sands cruised into the second round of the current Wimbledon Championships on Thursday.
In the opening round of women's doubles, Sania and her American partner handily defeated Desirae Krawczyk and Alexa Guarachi. In the first set, Krawczyk and Guarachi fought hard against Sania and Mattek-Sands, but the Indian tennis star and her partner won the first set 7-5.
Sania and Mattek-Sands continued their winning streak in the second set, defeating sixth seed Krawczyk-Guarachi 6-3 to begin their Grand Slam quest in style. Meanwhile, after their entries were formally declared on Thursday, Sania and Ankita are set to represent India in the Women's Doubles event at the forthcoming Tokyo Olympics.
Sania will become the first Indian woman to compete in four Olympics when she competes in Tokyo 2020, which begins on July 23. Ankita Raina will be competing for the first time at the Olympic event.
