Vijay Mallya Says Deepika Padukone, Katrina Kaif Were ‘Right Girls’ for Kingfisher Calendar: ‘We Picked Well’

Recently, in his first new interview, Vijay Mallya discussed his Kingfisher empire and the famous yearly calendar where many celebrities appeared as models. He mentioned on his podcast that after posing for him, the career of his calendar girls reached new heights, while giving examples of Deepika Padukone and Katrina Kaif being the most fitting choices.

The interviewer wanted to know from Mallya if he believes the models from the Kingfisher calendars saw the success they deserved. He replied, “Well, because we chose the right girls. I mean, whether it was Deepika Padukone or Katrina Kaif, we had all the heroines and the stars on the calendar in their younger days.”

Apparently, when it was mentioned that his early subjects were not well-known at that time, but went on to stardom, he responded, “You can tell we made good decisions, we had smart choices.”

Inventing the Kingfisher calendar was the idea of photographer Atul Kasbekar. Between 2003 and 2021, he captured the pictures every year using Indian models from different parts of the world. Mallya decided to model the calendar in the same way as the famous Pirelli calendar. He said that free versions of the magazine would have been impossible in India because of the country’s values. The models for the calendar were chosen in an annual competition called Kingfisher Calendar Model Hunt.

Many celebrities like Deepika, Katrina, Yana Gupta, Karishma Kothak, Bruna Abdullah, Nargis Fakhri, Esha Gupta, Lisa Hayden, Saiyami Kher, Sobhita Dhulipala, Nora Fatehi, Shubra Aiyappa, and a few more, appeared as calendar girls for this company.

Fighter, Kalki 2898 AD and Singham Again were Deepika’s recent movies, which she starred in last year. On Friday, the news came out that she will appear along with Allu Arjun in Atlee’s upcoming sci-fi movie. It has been three years since Katrina appeared in the movie Merry Christmas in 2024. No information has been released so far regarding her next projects.
