According to a report published in ABC News, a US-based broadcasting company, a nurse aged 45 has contracted the virus six days after taking a vaccine developed by Pfizer.
Matthew W took a shot of the Pfizer vaccine on December 18.
However, while working in a Covid-19 ward, she developed symptoms such as cold, muscle pain, and fatigue.
She underwent a test and learned that she has contracted Covid-19.
The US drug regulator has given permission to vaccines of two companies – Pfizer and Moderna – to be administered to citizens.
Infectious disease experts have explained various possibilities due to which the nurse has contracted the virus.
They say that immunity doesn’t develop immediately in the body after taking the vaccine. It takes about 10 to 14 days to develop antibodies against the virus.
Also, one dose of vaccine provides 50 percent protection from the infection. It is only the second dose that enhances the possibility of protection for up to 90 percent.
Some experts also say that it might be a possibility that she would be carrying the infection before she was vaccinated.
Since the incubation period of the virus is 14 days, its symptoms arose after the vaccination.
There can be many more possibilities but independent experts suggest that the case highlights the need to strictly follow the covid-19 protocols ever after a person has received the vaccine.
“What is important to learn here is that vaccine does provide protection to the body but at the same time one needs to wear a mask, maintain a safe distance from others and follow a practice of hand hygiene strictly," Dr. Manish Kumar Jain from the Department of Pulmonology, MahaRaja Agrasen Superspeciality Hospital, Jaipur, said.
