The ministry of client affairs, food & public distribution stated that the arrival of tomatoes is anticipated to be at par with last year that might bring much-needed relief to shoppers.
On Thursday, the average retail price of tomatoes was 67 per kilogram, 63% more than last year. The ministry highlighted the delayed arrivals of tomatoes from northern Indian states, followed by heavy rains in the south of the country that disrupted the supply chain and damaged crops.
"The average retail price of tomatoes in India has increased since late September 2021 due to unusual rains in Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh, which resulted in crop damage and delays in arrival from of these states, ”the ministry said. Adding that slight disruptions in the supply chain or damage from heavy rains cause prices to spike.
