The government in India is constantly making efforts to connect Eastern India to other parts of the country. In that endeavour, Union Minister of Civil Aviation Jyotiraditya M. Scindia flagged off the first direct flight between Guwahati (Assam) to Pune (Maharashtra).
Senior officials from the Aviation Ministry and the state government along with the prominent political leaders of the state were present on this occasion.
Scindia expressed his pleasure in starting the flight which connects the largest city of Northeast India – Guwahati, also called Gateway to North East to another prominent city, ie Pune.
“The significance of Guwahati is not limited to North-East India, or entire India or the entire world, the city of Guwahati finds its mentions across the ancient scriptures as well,” Scindia said.
People associated with the tourism sector say that the starting of flight will boost tourism as well because Guwahati has many temples which attract visitors from not only in India but from different parts of the world.
Temples such as Kamakhya Temple, Navagraha Temple, Umananda Temple among others have witnessed a huge turnout of religious tourists around the year.
“Moreover, the city is one of the largest tea markets in the country. I am delighted to mention that 55% of our tea exports are generated from Guwahati alone. In addition to these, Guwahati is also home to oil refineries and education institutions such as IIT, TISS etc,” Scindia said.
