According to the Commissioner of Food Safety, Telangana, the law has been imposed because a huge amount of tobacco and nicotine substances were found in Gutka and pan masala causing serious health problems.

Telangana Imposes Immediate Ban on Gutka and Pan Masala: The Telangana Government has taken a serious step by banning Gutka and Pan Masala across the state.
According to the Commissioner of Food Safety, Telangana, the law has been imposed because a huge amount of tobacco and nicotine substances were found in Gutka and pan masala causing serious health problems such as oral cancer, lung diseases, oral submucous fibrosis, and many serious health diseases.
The law will be imposed under the Food Safety and Standards Act, of 2006 for at least one year.
A tweet from the Commissioner of Food Safety, Telangana said, "The Commissioner of Food Safety has issued a notification prohibiting the manufacture, storage, distribution, transportation, and sale of Gutka and Pan Masala which contains tobacco and nicotine, with effect from 24.05.2024.

The notification further states that the law was filed under clause (a) of sub-section (2) of section 30 of the Food Safety and Standards Act 2006 and regulation 2.3.4 of the Food Safety and Standards Regulation of 2011.
According to the reports, a total of 6.8% of adults in india consume Gutka and pan masala and many Indian families are facing problems.
However, the law has affected many shops in Telangana causing huge problems in their sales.
Over 1 lakh shops have been affected, however, Salahuddin Dakhni, a head of the Pan Shop Owners said that we ask that chewing tobacco and zarda be permitted because these sales provide a living for millions of people.
Hindu reported that a seller from the Begum Bazar area said that similar orders have been made before but people who want to sell gutka and pan masala will still do it.
He further said that by imposing these laws, the Telangana government will notice that these kinds of goods will be sold on the black market for twice or three times the MRP price. However, the government should focus on changing the Act.
