Baba Ram Singh, a priest from a Gurudwara in Haryana, has allegedly shot himself to support the cause of farmers.
“Anguished to hear that Sant Baba Ram Singh ji Nanaksar Singhra wale shot himself at Singhu border in Kisan Dharna, looking at farmers' suffering,” Sukhbir Singh Badal, Shiromani Akali Dal President, has tweeted.
He attached a picture of Sant Baba Ram Singh along with a suicide note which he had written before shooting himself.
Badal further wrote, “Sant ji's sacrifice won't be allowed to go in vain. I urge GOI not to let situation deteriorate any further & repeal the 3 agri laws.”
The suicide note written in Gurmukhi, says, “I feel the pain of farmers fighting to ensure their rights... I share their pain because the government is not doing justice to them. To inflict injustice is a sin, but it is also a sin to tolerate injustice. To support farmers, some have returned their awards to the government. I have decided to sacrifice myself."
Singh was rushed to the nearby hospital. However, doctors declared him dead by the time he reached there.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also took to Twitter and said that Sant Baba Ram Singh Ji of Karnal committed suicide after seeing the plight of the farmers on the Kundli border. My condolences and tribute in this hour of grief.”
“Many farmers have sacrificed their lives. The brutality of the Modi government has crossed all limits,” he added.
He asked the Centre to quit stubbornness and immediately withdraw the anti-agricultural law.
