'Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant are very different’: Shardul Thakur on India’s New Test Leadership
Shardul Thakur spoke extensively about Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant as the Indian Test leadership duo before the England series.
'Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant are very different’: Next month, Team India will move into a new phase of Test cricket. The side will kick off its fourth World Test Championship cycle when it begins a five match series with England. The Indian team will be transitioning to a new team with Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli no longer in the format. Shubman Gill will captain India's new team and Rishabh Pant has been named his vice-captain. The Indian squad features two fresh call-ups to the national team in Sai Sudharsan and Arshdeep Singh. Karun Nair also makes a return to the fold after an eight year absence, and there is also a new spot for bowling all-rounder Shardul Thakur.
Shardul played well on the domestic circuit for Mumbai last season and made a case for a selection. The fast bowling-oriented conditions in England tipped the selection in his favour, both as a bowler and a batsman in the lower-middle order. In an interview with RevSportz, Shardul gave some insight in to the likely opportunity for him to play under Gill and Pant in the national set-up, because the three players shared the same Test dressing room since they made their debut.
“They both are big players and the future of India for sure. They are very different in character – where Shubman is very serious and calm, a composed kind of person when it comes to the game, and Rishabh is a funny and lively guy. But this again is their USP in their own way. They have contributed to the game on the biggest and most crucial stages, and that makes them very promising players for the future of India,” Shardul said.

Both will take leadership positions with a lot of experience as captains, though in white-ball formats. Gill leads the Gujarat Titans in the IPL while Pant is the captain of the Lucknow Super Giants. Gill has also captained India in a five-T20I series against Zimbabwe last year and Pant led the team during a series in the shortest format against South Africa in 2022.
