Seven people died after consuming hand sanitiser since they couldn't buy alcohol because liquor stores were closed in Wani tehsil of Yavatmal district in Maharashtra due to Covid-related restrictions. The incident occurred in the district's Vani village.
"The situation is being looked into. They were all labourers. When they couldn't get alcohol, they used hand sanitiser "According to Anjay Pujalwar, the Sub Divisional Officer of Police at Wani Police Station. The district magistrate in Yavatmal has ordered an investigation into the incident.
The Maharashtra government placed tighter restrictions on Thursday in response to the rapid increase in coronavirus cases.
In Andhra Pradesh, ten people died after ingesting hand sanitiser during the nationwide lockdown in July of last year.
Hand sanitisers for Covid-19 prevention that are approved by experts contain more than 70% alcohol. They're only meant to be used on the outside and can be dangerous if ingested.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray announced a night curfew and weekend lockdowns earlier this month to combat the coronavirus outbreak. This week, the Maharashtra government did not declare a state of emergency, but it did impose stringent restrictions.
For many weeks, Maharashtra, the worst-affected state, has been reporting over 50,000 daily coronavirus cases.
In the meantime, India has reported 3,46,786 new cases in the last 24 hours, with Maharashtra reporting 66,836 new cases, followed by Uttar Pradesh with 36,605, and Kerala with 28,447 new cases.
According to the health ministry, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Karnataka, Kerala, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, and Rajasthan record 74.15% of new cases.
