Sambhal Shahi Jama Masjid Chief Zafar Ali Arrested Over November 24 Violence
The Mughal-era mosque has been at the centre of a major row after a petition claimed that it was the site of an ancient Hindu temple.
Sambhal Shahi Jama Masjid: The Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the UP police has arrested today the president of Shahi Jama Masjid, Zafar Ali, in connection with a violence event that occurred on November 24.
Sambhal Superintendent of Police Krishan Kumar Bishnoi, while talking to PTI, said Shahi Jama Masjid head Jafar Ali has been arrested in the connection of November 24 unrest. He did not detail anymore.
The Mughal-era mosque here has been under fire since it was claimed by a petition that it was built over an ancient Hindu temple.
That town in Uttar Pradesh has turned inflammatory, because violence broke out during protests against a court-ordered survey of the mosque on November 24 last year.
Violence led to four deaths and injuries to several others, including police personnel.
It has been reported by ANI that out of the most important 12 registered cases, the SIT has filed charges against six of them related to the November 24 Sambhal violence, with a chargesheet of 4,000 pages.
As per the charge sheet, there were 159 total accused in the case. It also mentioned that, the weapons recovered from the site of violence and other places were manufactured in United Kingdom, USA, Germany and Czech Republic.

No other act of violence has been reported since last November, while the police kept up their security-tightness during Holi celebrations by means of flag marches.
Officials and locals celebrated Holi peacefully as did the Muslim community with Friday prayers. Okay, Jama Masjid also covered under tarpaulin to ensure no colours or vandalism happened in the mosque.
Circle Officer Anuj Chowdhary had led a flag march before Holi with other police personnel to ensure law and order in the district. Besides police, paramilitary forces also held a flag march in Sambhal while the administration has arranged for a drone for proper monitoring of the situation in the district.
After the order of the court, the regular activity of whitewashing Jama masjid was also carried out.
