The Russian military said it had control Kharson, and local Ukrainian officials confirmed that Russian forces had captured the local government headquarters in the Black Sea port, making it the most occupied since the offensive began a week earlier.
Tanks and other vehicles are also seen standing outside the capital Kyiv. On the outskirts of another strategic port city on the Azov Sea, Mariupol, fighting continued on Thursday. Electricity and phone connections are largely shut, and homes and shopkeepers are facing a shortage of food and water.
