Over the current war between the Ukraine and Russia which has now been going on for over a month, the United States President called Vladimir Putin a “Butcher”, who cannot remain in power. Biden also said that this war is a strategic failure for Russia, ever since Russia launched a military attack in Ukraine. He said so after meeting top Ukrainian ministers for the first time since Russia's invasion.
Yesterday, while speaking to a gathering in Poland, Biden while referring to his Russian counterpart said, “Don’t even think about moving on one single inch of NATO territory. This war has already been a strategic failure for Russia. You, the Russian people, are not our enemy. For God's sake, this man cannot remain in power.”
However, within minutes of his comments in Warsaw, a White House official played down President Biden's remarks. Immediately after making the statement, the United States was accused of interfering in Russia's internal matters on which the White House gave an official clarification.
The White House officials stated, “The President's point was that Putin cannot be allowed to exercise power over his neighbors or the region. He was not discussing Putin’s power in Russia, or regime change, "Biden`s line that Putin "cannot remain in power'' was not in his prepared remarks.”
The United States has mentioned that they intend to provide Ukraine with an additional $100 million in the form of Civilian Security Assistance. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in a statement that the assistance would be to build the capacity of the Ukrainian ministry of internal affairs.
Biden’s statement however did not sit well with Moscow which was quick to criticize Biden’s remarks. The Kremlin mentioned that whether or not Putin should be in power is not up to anyone else but the people of the Russian Federation to decide.
